uPVC Windows and Replacement Windows FAQ
Most common questions asked about Replacement uPVC windows / uPVC windows:
Q. Will my replacement uPVC windows Discolour?
A. Providing the uPVC used to make the profile is of good quality e.g. Rehau,
Veka, Synseal, and Spectus you should not encounter any discolouration. Any
reputable company who supply and fits replacement windows will warrant
against this happening.
Q. Do I have to clean my replacement windows as I am have been told there
are maintenance free?
A. Yes, you will need to clean your replacement windows, when you hear its
maintenance free, what is meant is that you don't have to look after them
like timber windows ; your replacement windows will require cleaning all
that's required is a wipe over with a damp cloth, every 12 months cleaned
with a good quality upvc cleaner the locks and hinges oiled from time to
time, bit like your car.
If you don’t like cleaning windows there is a self cleaning glass on the
market called Active glass, by Pilkington glass an ultra-thin coating only
40 nm thick, is applied to the glass surface during the manufacturing
process. This means that when rain hits the glass, it doesn't form droplets.
Rain water flows down the glass in a sheet and washes the dirt away."
Alternatively, a hose can be used to clean the glass when there is little or
no rainfall.
Q. I am thinking of replacing a window to the back of my house which is
south facing with a patio door, will this make the room hot if so will I
need some form of shading?
A. Yes this will make the room warm on a sunny day, we would suggest that
you may like to consider window blinds fitted that will protect your
furniture and keep the room cool.
Q. I am considering having replacement windows fitted to my house I live
near to a road that runs down the side of my property will this help to
sound proof my property?
A. Yes, by fitting replacement windows to your property will certainly
improve the sound proofing. We would suggest that you choose your
replacement windows with argon filled sealed units with a gap of a minimum
of 25 mm.
Q. I live in a conservation area, and am considering having replacement
windows to replace my old metal windows would
there be any restrictions?
A. Yes there will be certain restrictions. My experience has found it is
best to discuss this with the conservation officer, as the criteria may
differ from one area to another. From the picture above I would imagine that
upvc windows may not be permitted.
Q. We suffer from bad condensation; will replacement windows prevent
this?
A. Not necessary, condensation is a very common occurrence. It can be very
unpleasant because it reduces visibility, stains the windows and can leave
pools of water on the window cills.
When water vapour from the air comes into contact with cold surfaces, the
vapour condenses on the cooler surface of the glass forming a foggy effect.
However, by replacing your old windows with new, this may help as the sealed
unit will be a warm surface which can only help. While this condensation is
annoying, it also indicates excessive humidity inside the room which should
be reduced. We would suggest that the cause of high humidity is tackled
first which could be as simple as additional ventilation e.g. extractor fans
in the kitchen and bathrooms to remove excessive humidity.
